Summary of regulations EN 340 for protecting clothing - 89/686/EEC

All the existing six “types” are related to the clothing of “Category III”. This means that are designed to protect against hazardous substances that may threaten human life. Products of Category I are those that do not protect from any hazardous substance. Materials such as basic polypropylene of one layer are not considered to be suitable for protection from hazardous substances.
The protective clothing is characterized by six “Types” of protection which are given below:

Type 1 prEN 943: 1995
Clothes that do not permit the passage of gas.
Clothes that are essentially “sealed” from the environment.

Type 2 prEN 943: 1995

Clothes that provide positive internal pressure to prevent the entry of powders, liquids or vapours.

Type 3 EN 1511: 1994

Type 4 EN 1512: 1993
Clothes that do not permit the passage of spray droplets.
Clothes that can protect against liquid chemical soaking, where the liquid is gradually increasing over the cloth to form “lakes” and then “rivers”. Requires “barrier” cloth (chemical testing according to Penetration Test EN369) and sealed seams.

Type 5 prEN 13982-1/2
Clothes of dry particles.
Clothes that protect from harmful dust and each dry particle.

Type 6 prEN 13634
Clothes of limited droplets.
Clothes that protect from light droplets and droplets of liquid chemicals where there is no directed spray or gradual accumulation of the fluid in the cloth, but there may be a fine mist of droplets into the atmosphere.

Antistatic EN1149.1
Maximum surface resistivity 5x1010 OHMS.

Radioactive contamination
EN 1073-2 Category 1
